KW Student to Compete at National Shakespeare Competition

The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District is proud to announce that we will once again be represented at the English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition at the Lincoln Center in New York City!

Isabella Teter, a senior, is the 3rd Kenmore West student in the last five years to be selected for the national competition following a 1st place finish at the Regional Shakespeare Competition. She will be one of around 40 students from across the country to compete in the semi-finals held in New York City. The top 10 performers from the semi-finals will advance to the final round with prizes awarded to the top three.

“I’m really proud of myself because this year I knew I really wanted to go far in the competition,” said Teter. “I put a lot of work in and figured out what would make me go far. It paid off and it’s so exciting.”

Additionally, Kenmore West junior Ella Roberts has been named an alternate if Isabella can’t attend. Roberts had an outstanding showing and placed 2nd at the Regional Competition. Both students will be preparing for the national competition that takes place in late April.

“Isabella and Ella really put Ken-Ton on the map by performing exceptionally well at the Regional Competition,” Kenmore West theater teacher Diana Gruninger said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for these students and I couldn’t be prouder of these young ladies or of this program.”

“Having a theater program where we’re able to get that far means there’s a lot of competition. Competition makes you better and it encourages you to work harder,” Teter said. “It’s really cool to have a program that’s so competitive and has so many kids doing really cool things.”

The ESU National Shakespeare Competition will take place April 26-28th.
