English as a New Language (ENL)

  • In our district, English as a New Language (ENL) teachers work with students in Gr. K-12 who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELL). All of our students come from homes where a language other than English is spoken. Our students speak a variety of languages, including Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Armenian, Kurdish, and Spanish, Burmese, and more! As ENL teachers, we support these students in the reading, writing, listening, and speaking of English, as well as in their academic content.

Parental involvement is indispensable to an ELL student’s success! ENL teachers will make every effort to maintain continuous contact with parents regarding a child’s progress. Communication will take place through the following means:

    • Parents will receive a letter documenting their child’s placement in the ENL program each fall
    • Parents will be invited to open houses and school orientations
    • Parents will be scheduled for biannual parent/teacher conferences
    • Parents will receive testing notification for state testing
    • Some schools will have monthly parent meetings
    • Translators will be provided by schools
