Students & Board Members Recognized at Artist Reception
On Wednesday, October 23rd, we were extremely excited to recognize student artists, art teachers, and Board of Education members at the annual Student Artist Reception and Board of Education Appreciation Night. This is always a very special night for the Ken-Ton School District. This event allows us to celebrate the talents of 10 student artists and their art teachers and to reflect on the importance of art in education. It also allows us to recognize the dedicated service of our Board of Education members.
For this event, one student from each school is selected to have their artwork framed and proudly displayed in the Kenmore Junior/Senior High School Community Room for the coming year. These students and their art teachers are recognized at the reception as we unveil the students’ artwork. The students and art teachers recognized this year were:
- Violet Crosby, 1st Grader at Franklin Elementary (Teacher – Andrea Spoth): “Georgia O’keeffe Flower”
- Kendell McGuire, 3rd Grader at Hoover Elementary (Teacher – Jennifer Lynch): “Landscape”
- Alex Garretson Jr., 4th Grader at Lindbergh Elementary (Teacher – Linsey Buchlis): “Ted Harrison Landscape”
- Avery Nicosia, 5th Grader at Franklin Middle, previously at Edison Elementary (Teacher – Wendy Yiengst): “Koi Pond”
- Paw Wah, 5th Grader at Hoover Middle, previously at Holmes Elementary (Teacher – Diane Schaefer): “My Cool Hands”
- Autumn Scinta-Mix, 7th Grader at Hoover Middle (Teacher – Brianne Nightingale): “Under The Sea”
- Avianna Muir, 8th Grader at Kenmore East, previously at Franklin Middle (Teacher – Lisa Mihelbergel): “The Eye Of Winter”
- Chloe Christmann, 9th Grader at Kenmore East (Teacher – Meagan Sheppard): “Lavender Haven”
- Aubrianna Luke, 11th Grader at Kenmore Junior/Senior High (Teacher – Jennifer Leone): “Serenity”
- Mia Winkler, 11th Grader at Kenmore West (Teacher – Richard Tomasello): “Untitled”
Artwork by two students, one from the elementary level and one from the secondary level, is selected to be duplicated, framed, and presented to each Board member as a token of gratitude for their service. The students selected this year were Violet Crosby and Chloe Christmann.
This event always coincides with School Board Recognition Week, which is celebrated in communities across New York State to recognize the efforts of those who serve on our local boards of education. In Ken-Ton, the school district is governed by five trustees who volunteer their time to serve the students and residents of the district: Board President Matthew Chimera, Board Vice President Todd Paul Spors, Trustee Fred Floss, Trustee Karen Whitelaw, and Trustee Lee Ann Vogt.
This event gives us an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work they do on behalf of our community. These are not paid positions and our Board members devote countless hours of their time in this role. Many people are unaware of how much time and work goes into being a Board member - attending meetings, advocacy, staying up-to-date on important topics or issues, participating in trainings, collaborating with Board members from other districts, visiting schools, attending events, meeting/interacting with community members, and more.
Ken-Ton is extremely lucky to have such dedicated and committed Board members serving our students, families, staff, and community.
