Kenmore West's Sierra Green Helping Pediatric Cancer Patients

Kenmore West senior Sierra Green is making a difference, bringing awareness, and setting an example for young girls everywhere.

Sierra is a Girl Scout who’s working toward her Gold Award, the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA. In order to earn a Gold Award, a girl scout has to find an issue in her community and come up with a solution to solve that issue. Sierra is doing that this month by honoring former Girl Scout Troup member “Sophia the Fierce” who passed away from cancer in May 2023.

“It was my job as a leader, when Sophia passed away, to empower these girls what to do with their grief,” said Ann Marie Polizzi Lesnewski on WIVB’s Daytime Buffalo. “Through that grief, a positive spin was to create this legacy to carry the things that she would want these cancer patients to receive.”

“Sophia had a lot of big dreams,” Sierra added. “One of those goals was to allow kids with cancer to escape those struggles for a day and see what Girl Scout camp is like.”

The Sophia Legacy Camp is a day camp that’s completely free for pediatric cancer warriors and their families. The camp, which is put on by Sierra’s Girl Scout Troup in collaboration with Sophia the Fierce Inc., takes place September 14th and features games, activities, and entertainment. Sierra has taken the lead on planning this weekend’s entire event as she works to earn her Gold Star award and make it sustainable, so that this can continue to be an annual event.

“In Girl Scouts it’s all about being girl-led, so the cool thing is watching Sierra put this together,” Polizzi Lesnewski said. “It’s fun to watch that leadership. Not everyone gets the opportunity to plan an event like this, and now she knows how to do this going into life.”
