Kenmore East Cheerleaders Promote Women in Sports at Hoover

Kenmore East cheerleaders post with Hoover students and their projects on famous female athletes

Wednesday, February 7th, was National Women in Sports Day and the Kenmore East High School varsity cheerleading team found a way to celebrate women in sports and encourage others to do the same!

The team visited Hoover Elementary School Wednesday morning and spent time an hour in Amy Benfanti’s third grade class where the athletes helped Benfanti's students complete biography reports on famous women athletes!

"To have these older kids come to our classroom was huge because it's so important for my students to get that kind of interaction," Benfanti said. "It was also neat for some of my girl students who want to be cheerleaders and dancers. They see the cheerleaders in their school uniform and outfits and think it's so cool!"

Students researched chosen athletes on their Chromebooks and then presented their projects to the class. Some of the athletes they researched included tennis player Serena Williams, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and decorated gymnast Simone Biles.

The cheerleading team says their main objective "was to highlight influential female athletes that not only made history in their respective sport but made a major impact in society."
