Hoover Middle Staff Come Together to Help Local Family from Congo
Staff members at Hoover Middle School have come together to help one local family!
Adele Voskerichian, an ENL (English as a New Language) teacher at Hoover Middle, recently learned that two of her students lived in a home where the family was washing their clothes by hand, since they didn’t own a washer & dryer. The family of six from Congo is new to the Ken-Ton School District with kids attending Hoover Middle, Holmes Elementary, and Kenmore West.
Voskerichian put out a message to school staff asking if anyone knew of an inexpensive washer & dryer they could provide the family. In true Hoover Middle fashion, staff stepped up in a big way! A washer was found for free at Buy Nothing, an online app, and was delivered to the home and installed by the husband of RTI Math Teacher Deanna Guagliano. The school’s cafeteria staff chipped in and bought the family a used dryer with cafeteria monitor John Ferraina delivering and installing.
“HMS is a generous building so I knew someone would have a solution, but it was 100% unexpected to have the cafeteria monitors pitch in and buy a dryer, pick it up, and install it. Same for the Guagliano’s”, Voskerichian said. “HMS does its best to instill the theme of kindness and this is a wonderful example of just that!”
Voskerichian says the family has been very grateful for the school’s generosity and are very excited to use the machines.
