FES Students Learn About Science in Fun New Ways
At Franklin Elementary School, students have been taking part in a variety of fun activities that have expanded their knowledge and understanding of science. For example, they observed the real-life effects of erosion, created their own land forms, learned about the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, and used magnets to paint.
Fourth-grade students have been learning about the differences between weathering and erosion. They have completed different labs to determine how water affects the rate of erosion on different types of materials and how to slow down the process of erosion.
First-grade students have been learning about the different phases of the moon. Addison Lubeski at Franklin Elementary was the “super scientist helper” and was able to project her work on the board to lead her class in a moon phases activity using Oreo cookies.
Kindergarten classes have been learning about forces, pushes, and pulls. To finish up their unit, they have been working with magnets in various ways, including painting with magnets. They used their magnetic wand to push paperclips through paint to make their own one-of-a-kind masterpieces.
Second-grade students have been learning how the surface of the Earth can change quickly or slowly. They were able to use this knowledge to develop a model to identify and represent different shapes and types of landforms found on Earth. They then completed peer critiques to wrap up the project.
