Internet SafetyBeware! Predators! It's really easy to become someone your not on the Internet. After all, who's going to know if you add a couple of inches to your height, use another person's photo, or change your occupation. On the Internet, you can be anything you want. But guess what? If it's easy for you to be someone else, it's just as easy for others also. There are people who use the Internet to meet other people, some use it to meet kids for reasons that are not totally legit, and they're not always easy to spot. They're really good at what they do: making friends with you and trying to seduce kids into meeting them for sex. A predator could rape you, kidnap you, or kill you.A person may pretent to be a kid. They could have a cool website with all the latest music and music video's. They might have a cool picture of what they want you to think they look like. The person may even come right out and say that he or she is in there 30's or 40's. They may tell you that you are the cutest or sexiest thing ever.If this happens, it should definately ring a bell. Remember that this person may intend to rape or kill you.And there a lot of these people out there. Did you know that 1in 5 kids say they've been sexually solicited on the Internet? These people prey on kids who are unsure of themselves, eager for attention and spend a lot of time online.Remember:
- People are not always who they say they are. The cute sophmore your talking too and exchanging emails with just might be a 40 year old man who likes children. So watch what you say online.
- Do not post personal information or reavealing pics in your profile. Once an image is out there, you don't know where it may end up.
- Call 911 and notify the police immediately if an adult tries to send a sexually explicit picture to a child or tries to get a sexually explicit picture from a child.
To Catch a predator....There are several ways to report an online predator:- If you think there is a threat to your safety or well being, call 911, or let your local police or SRO know immediately. Let them know that a stranger has threatened you online, and that you would like to file a report. You will never get in trouble for making such a report, even it it turns out the predator wasn't real.
- Submit a report to the CyberTipline. This is an agency that was created by the United States Congress to take reports of abuisive behavior towards children on the Internet. Reports can be submitted anytime 24/7 at www.cybertipline.com, or call toll free 1-800-843-5678.
Parents and the InternetSo parents, are you totally clueless about the internet? No Surprise! I speak to many parents who are literally afraid of the computer.
