Kenmore West Student Honored by NPR for Podcast
Kenmore West High School student Olivia Mock has been recognized by National Public Radio! Mock, a 10th grader, earned an honorable mention nod in the 2024 NPR Student Podcast Challenge, going up against students from across the country.
The contest involved students creating podcasts that ran between three to eight minutes in length on a specific topic the student was interested in. The podcasts were judged on how informative and compelling they were, as well as creativity and production quality.
Olivia created her podcast last school year in her Honors English class, led by English teacher Jennifer LaManna. She used the cloud-based video editing app WeVideo with the help of LaManna, as well as assistance from library media specialist Elizabeth Aszkler and instructional support specialist for technology Mary Beth Flatau. Olivia’s podcast was entered into the contest and ended up earning an Honorable Mention.
In Olivia's podcast, entitled “The 70s vs. the 2000s,” she interviews both her sister and grandmother to discuss their experiences growing up, such as what they watched on TV, their favorite things to do as children, and the toys they played with. Through this, Olivia shines a light on how different their upbringing was but also how similar.
You can click here to access the podcast, which is available on iTunes, the Google Play Store, and the NPR website. Congratulations Olivia!
