Spring 2019 Sports Season Highlights

Kenmore West Baseball finished the season with an extraordinary 16-2 overall record, clinching the NFL title after a 3-1 win over Lockport which was John Haynes’ 100th win as coach. During the playoffs, the team defeated Grand Island and then Williamsville South before taking on Niagara-Wheatfield in the Class A-1 Championship. The Blue Devils won 5-3, securing the team’s first-ever Section VI title, and then defeated Iroquois 8-3 on June 1 to claim the overall Class A title, making it all the way to the Far West Regionals. Coach Haynes was named All-Bee Baseball Coach of the Year, Don Schmidt was named All-Bee Pitcher of the Year and was selected for the 1st Team All-WNY and Section VI Player of the Year, and Zach LaPlante and Rafael Smith were both named to the All-Bee First Team.

The combined Kenmore Boys Rugby club team won its seventh straight regional title and then defeated Fairport in the first round of the playoffs, securing a spot in the NYS championships at Binghamtom University. The team defeated the Play Rugby USA Academy in the semi-finals and then took on perennial state champion Xavier High School in the championship match, losing 10-45. This was the fourth time the team has finished second in NYS.

Kenmore West Softball finished the season 9-7 in the NFL and 11-8 overall. The team overcame Sweet Home 4-3 in its first playoff match but fell to Williamsville South in the quarterfinals. This was Coach Matthew Chimera's final season as coach before he retires after 25 years, and he secured his 400th career win earlier this season on April 6 against cross-town rival Kenmore East. During his career, Chimera led the team to 12 NFL titles, four Section VI championships, and 1 NYS championship.

From Kenmore West Track & Field, Chris Kaszynski was the Section VI pole vault champion and qualified for the NYS meet, where he placed fourth in Division 1 and eighth in the Federation. Mark Marrelli won second place at Sectionals in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. At the NFL Championships, Laura Cohn won the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Marrelli won the 110-meter hurdles, and Abby Knab placed second in the high jump.

The combined Kenmore East and Kenmore West Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team finished its first season as an official Section VI varsity program with 9-6 record.
