Family Support Center to Offer 4 College Readiness Workshops for Families Beginning Oct. 15
The Family Support Center will offer a four-week college readiness workshop program that supplements the work of a student's school counselor during the school day. There will be two one-hour sessions, from 6 to 7 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. once each week for four weeks, with a different topic each week. The dates are as follows:
- Oct. 15
- Oct. 22
- Oct. 29
- Nov. 5
Five families can be accommodated for each one-session. As with any program that is offered at the Family Support Center, these workshops are free for all families that reside in the Ken-Ton School District and have children who attend either Kenmore East, Kenmore West, or the Big Picture Program.

Session #1
October 15, 2018 - Refining the College Search
Topics covered: What does finding the right college fit mean? Admissions Requirements, program/majors, cost, location, size, campus visits, college rep visits to high schools, Standardized Tests, Test Optional, etc. Essentially, where are you in the process and what do you need to do to be ready to submit your application in a couple of months.
We will use Naviance as our main search tool and teaching guide. We will show families how Naviance can help them through the process.
Session #2
October 22, 2018 - Navigating College Applications Part I
Topics Covered: Common application, SUNY Application, Coalition Application, Naviance Matching, Navaince Search tool, deadlines, new financial aid process and deadlines, merit aid vs. need based aid, standardized test dates and differences, what does expressed interest mean in the application process.
We will again use Naviance and other internet based programs to help them navigate this process. We will also use college guide books (Fiske, Ruggs Recommendations) to help families.
Session #3
October 29, 2018 - Application Process Part II
Topics Covered: Looking at the College Essay, Role of Teacher recommendations, Exploring Common Application and other essay prompts, starting the actual application (Common Application, SUNY Application, Individual institutional applications). Making sure the applications tells the students story, highlighting their strengths.
Will make sure their Common Application is matched to Naviance and work families through the process of essays, teacher recommendations.
Session #4
November 5, 2018 - College Essay and Supplemental Questions (OPTIONAL)
Topics Covered: Planning and crafting a college essay and supplemental essay questions. How to actually submit applications, informing your school counselor where you are in process and the role they will play. Explain the process of how to request transcripts and letters of recommendations in Naviance.
