Elementary Schools Celebrate Veterans Day
In the days leading up to Veterans Day, students and staff in Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda elementary schools have joined together to celebrate those whose service and sacrifice make our community safe and free.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, students at Hoover Elementary School gave a very warm welcome to 28 community heroes for its special "Read With a Hero" event to commemorate Veterans Day. Current and retired members of the Armed Forces, emergency responders, and leaders from the Town of Tonawanda Police Department joined with students for a patriotic celebration and then met with individual classes to share a favorite book and talk to them about their service.
A very special thanks goes out to reading teacher Linda Gianturco and all the other staff who helped make the event such a tremendous success, and especially to all of our visitors who helped the students learn about and appreciate the service and sacrifice of all those who make our community safe and free.
The next day, on Friday, Nov. 8, more than 40 current and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces representing all five service branches -- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard -- were honored at Lindbergh Elementary School to commemorate Veterans Day. Each guest was closely related to someone at the school, and each was honored individually and received a carnation from the students and staff who invited them.
It was a wonderful way to come together as a school and celebrate our country and those who have protected it. It was also a reminder of the service and sacrifice of so many men and women in our very own community who safeguard our way of life.
On Friday, Nov. 8, Franklin Elementary School held its second annual "Bring a Veteran to School" celebration to commemorate Veterans Day and to honor members of the Franklin school community who are serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Students had the opportunity to invite members of their family who are current or retired service personnel. Guests were introduced and honored for their service and sacrifice at a school-wide assembly followed by a reception for the honored guests and the students who invited them. The event was organized by the teachers and staff of the school's Red, White & Blue Committee.
