Art Night & Skype Session with Jane Goodall at Hoover Elementary
On Tuesday, April 9, Kerry Smith's fourth-grade class at Hoover Elementary School had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall through a Skype in the Classroom event.
Students had the chance to hear from Dr. Goodall directly about her work and research and were able to submit questions to Dr. Goodall after her presentation. They were especially interested to learn about her cohabitation with chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania and her courageous adventures, including a near-death experience with a beloved chimp named Frodo as he was exhibiting his dominance over the troop.
Dr. Goodall is considered to be the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees and is best known for her more than 55-year study of social and family interactions of chimpanzees in the wild. She is also the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, a wildlife and environmental conservation organization with offices in 25 countries around the globe.
At the end of her presentation, Dr. Goodall left students with the following message: “Never forget that you have the power to make a difference in this world, every day that you live.”
In other Hoover Elementary news, approximately 300 families took part in art teacher Jennifer Lynch’s immensely successful Art Night on March 28. An annual tradition, Art Night is one of the most popular events of the year. This year, each participant created a sock bunny craft to take home. The event is organized and led by Mrs. Lynch with help from a handful of faculty volunteers who assist with helping families with materials.
