The Ken-Ton School District works in close partnership with the Town of Tonawanda Police Department and the Kenmore Police Department to identify optimal locations for crossing guards in order to maximize pedestrian safety for students attending both public and non-public schools.

Crossing guard locations are determined based on the number of students who rely upon the crossing, particularly younger students, as well as the size of the street, traffic conditions, and other factors. Crossing guards are deployed at key times based on individual school arrival/dismissal times, when students are most likely to be utilizing the crossing.

Over time, changes have been made as conditions have changed such as attendance boundaries, pedestrian/vehicle traffic patterns, and other factors (such as school consolidation and the closure of the pedestrian bridge over Sheridan Drive).

Periodically during the school year, data is gathered on the number of students who utilize each individual crossing in the morning and afternoon. In the coming year, the district will work with the Town of Tonawanda Police Department to closely examine crossing guard data and pedestrian traffic patterns to identify potential changes to further optimize crossing guard locations beginning with the 2020-21 school year.

The Ken-Ton School District and Town of Tonawanda Police Department are committed to maximizing pedestrian safety and are grateful for those who serve as crossing guards and ensure the safety of students walking to and from school each day.
