Dear Ken-Ton Community,
This afternoon, we were made aware of a threatening Snapchat message posted by a Kenmore East student. We immediately contacted the Town of Tonawanda Police Department which initiated an investigation and interviewed the student and his family. The district and police are now pursuing disciplinary and criminal charges.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Town of Tonawanda Police Department maintained an increased presence at the Franklin Complex and Adams Field this evening. As a reminder, all students are now screened using our OpenGate detectors each and every day as part of our routine arrival procedures as well as at every football game.
It is crucial that families have conversations with their children about the consequences of posting inappropriate content on social media. Please be aware that any statements or actions that suggest a threat to the safety and security of our school community are taken extremely seriously. Any time a report like this is received, school district staff and law enforcement agencies respond as if it is a real and credible threat. Potential threats come with significant consequences.
This situation was able to be addressed swiftly because of the open communication and vigilance of students, staff, administrators, and the Town of Tonawanda Police Department. Students and families should always remember:
- If you see something, say something.
- Immediately report any concern to the school district. If you cannot do so, another option is the Say Something Anonymous Tip Line.
- If a safety concern arises after hours, students and families should immediately contact the Town of Tonawanda and/or Kenmore Police Departments.
We will always keep the safety of students as our highest priority. Discipline for inappropriate social media posts will be handled swiftly and to the fullest extent of the law. As always, thank you to our community for your commitment to keeping our school district safe.
Sincerely,
Sabatino Cimato
Superintendent of Schools
