Dual Participation

The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District recognizes the value of multi-sport participation and encourages student-athletes to participate in multiple sports throughout the school year. However, participation in two varsity sports during the same season ("dual participation") is considered an exception and not an opportunity available to all student-athletes.

The Niagara Frontier League defines dual participation as:
"An athlete playing two varsity sports simultaneously in the same sports season."

1. Unified Sports
Dual participation involving a Unified Sport is strongly supported and serves as the primary opportunity for dual participation within the District. Unified Sports provide meaningful and inclusive experiences for student-athletes and generally do not create significant conflicts with other varsity programs.

2. Grandfathered Student-Athletes
Student-athletes who were previously approved for dual participation may reapply for the same combination of sports in which they have already participated. Prior approval does not guarantee future approval but allows the student-athlete to be considered under this provision.

3. Prior Varsity Participation
A student-athlete may be considered for dual participation if they have previously
demonstrated success on a varsity roster in one of the sports involved.

Prior participation provides valuable historical information regarding the student’s:
     •    Attendance and reliability
     •   Commitment to team expectations
     •   Communication with coaches
     •   Ability to balance responsibilities and manage scheduling conflicts

For example, a student-athlete who successfully competed on a varsity soccer team as a ninth grader and wishes to participate in varsity soccer and varsity golf as a tenth grader may be considered for dual participation based on their demonstrated track record.

Previous varsity participation does not guarantee approval and will be considered as one factor in the review process.

Application Process

Student-athletes who meet one of the eligibility criteria outlined above may submit a Dual Participation Application for consideration. All applications will be reviewed on an individual basis by the appropriate administrators and athletic department personnel.

The District reserves the right to deny any application based on factors including, but not limited to:
     • Commitment and availability
     • Impact on either program
     • Health and safety concerns, including increased risk of injury
     • Academic standing
     • Failure to meet the expectations outlined in the dual participation agreement

Participation in two varsity sports during the same season requires exceptional
communication, commitment, and responsibility from the student-athlete. Approval of a dual participation request should not be interpreted as a right or entitlement and remains subject to District review and approval.
