Hoover Elementary Unveils New Sensory Pathway

Hoover Elementary School is home to a new Sensory Pathway, filling a great need within the building. This pathway is a great way to provide sensory support to our special education and general education students.

"Many of our students benefit from movement, sensory input, and opportunities to regulate throughout the school day in order to be successful learners," said Special Education aide Jessica Nagy and PE teacher Heather Ratka. "While classrooms and existing sensory spaces already provide important supports, we recognized the need for an additional resource that students and staff could access throughout the day."

The Sensory Pathway was unveiled on Tuesday, June 2nd and is located next to the school's Special Education classrooms and kindergarten wing. The pathway provides students a calming space to be active, concentrate, reset, and return to learning ready to succeed. Wall and floor decals give students a variety of activities to do like jumping and stretching. The school plans to utilize the pathway right away and hopes to continue to build the pathway and surrounding area into an amazing resource for the building and students.

"Our vision for this space is only the beginning," Nagy and Ratka said. "We hope to continue growing this area into two separate sensory pathway spaces with additional tools and supports that may not always be available in classrooms or other sensory areas."
