Gr. 4 Musical Instrument Information

Your child is about to begin a new and exciting phase of their education: learning to play a musical instrument!  Learning an instrument does not always come easy, which can be difficult for a youngster to understand.  It takes careful practice, time and dedication to develop the skills needed to be successful.  When both teacher and parent provide encouragement, patience, and understanding, learning to play a musical instrument can be a successful and enjoyable experience.  Please read and discuss the following expectations with your child before making the commitment to play a musical instrument.

  • Playing an instrument is a year-long commitment.
  • Weekly lessons, rehearsals, and concerts must be attended.
  • Students must bring their instrument and materials to lessons and rehearsals.  Please note: Students who play large instruments (cello, bass, french horn, trombone, and baritone) will have one home instrument and one school instrument.
  • Orchestra & Band start in January, during the school-day.
  • Proper care of the instrument is expected
  • Consistent practice: 20 minutes of practice 4 times a week (total of 80 min.)

4th grade Instrumental Music Recruitment Plan for 2025-26:

  2. During school students will be asked to pick three instruments that they are interested in playing.
  3. Students will meet with their music teacher individually to narrow down their choices to the instrument that best fits them.
  4. The music teacher will notify the students and parents/guardians of the instrument that the student has been placed on. The $40 Rental fee will be paid for through the Community Education Department. https://register.ktufsd.org/wconnect/ace/home.htm
  5. The music department's goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to experience playing a musical instrument. We work closely with students and parents to help select the instrument that is the best fit for the child, while also ensuring balanced instrumentation in both band and orchestra. Please wait to pay the rental fee until your child has been assigned an instrument.

If you are considering purchasing an instrument please contact the music teacher for a list of recommended instrument brands. It is very important that you choose a quality brand when purchasing a musical instrument.  Unfortunately, there are many off-brands available today that are not good choices for purchase.  Some of these off-brands cannot even be repaired when they become broken, because the necessary parts to repair them are not available.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s music teacher.
