Curriculum"Great minds discuss ideas.Average minds discuss events.Small minds discuss people."- Eleanor RooseveltThe 8th grade English curriculum centers on the Common Core Learning Standards. We will be learning from the New York State approved curriculum this year. As per the country's education initiatives, students will be reading more informational texts and more challenging texts. Students will be learning reading strategies that will enable them to better attack these texts. They will also be working to improve their writing skills by citing direct evidence from the text to prove their thoughts. Mini research projects may also be assigned during the year. The goal is to teach students skills that will make them ready for high school and beyond.Texts will also be linked to several informational texts to provide background for the central text. Many of these informational texts will relate to social studies and science topics. Students will learn strategies for taking notes, will participate in group discussions, and will answer text-dependent questions both verbally and in writing. Language skills, such as vocabulary and grammar, will be based on the texts we are studying. For specifics on what your child is doing in class, watch for monthly reports on this site.
