• 7th Grade Technology
     
            7th grade technology is similar to 8th grade in the sense that they take tech ed for 10 weeks and are shared between two teachers for 5 weeks each. I teach a unit on structures and building design. Over the 5 weeks that the students spend in my classroom, they study the 5 forces involved in structures, (compression, tension, torsion, bending, and shearing.) The students apply this knowledge to towers that they design to survive the strongest vertical impact possible. The build their designs and test them in the "meteor machine." There is also a research component of the class, where the students choose some type of structure in history, anything from ancient roman aquaducts to modern cable stay bridges, and complete a research paper or power point presentation on the architectural aspects of that structure.
