Girls on the Run Teaches Confidence & Self Esteem Through Training for 5K
Girls on the Run teams from several Ken-Ton schools took part in a 5K at the University at Buffalo in June, joining thousands of girls from throughout Western New York and their run buddies to accomplish something they had never done before.
The 2015-16 school year was Hoover Middle School’s first year participating in the Girls on the Run Heart and Sole Program, which is for students at the middle school level. They learned how to support each other, love themselves, overcome barriers, and successfully set personal goals.
At Franklin Middle, there were a total of 22 practices during the year teaching them not only how to train, but how to love themselves for who they are, stand up for what is right, believe they have the heart to accomplish anything, build positive and trusting relationships, and give back to their community.
At Holmes Elementary, the students trained twice a week and also gave back to the community. One team and many of the staff at Holmes Elementary received blue hair extensions from a hair stylist, learning that blue denotes bullying prevention and raising money for Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the process. Another team took time to help at the Ken-Ton closet as part of their community project.
The culminating end-of-year 5K at UB was an amazing event for all participants, followed by an end of the year celebration for all of their hard work and efforts.
