Survivor of Nazi Germany Speaks to Students in Ken-East World War II Class
Stone, born Steinberg, lived in Munich with his parents and brother at the beginning of World War II and spoke of his experiences as a small child in Nazi Germany at the time of the Nuremberg Laws. He discussed his experiences during the rise of the Nazi party and how he was banned from attending school in Germany. He also spoke about how the family’s personal items were often searched by Nazi officials.
On Nov. 9, 1938, Hitler’s SA forces launched deadly attacks against people of the Jewish faith in Germany and Austria and their homes and businesses in what would later be known as Kristallnacht – the Night of Broken Glass. Stone was just 13 years old at the time.
The family narrowly avoided being sent to the Concentration Camps and barely escaped Germany, emigrating to the U.S. at the last minute before the German borders were sealed. Stone spoke of how his grandmother survived the Concentration Camps and finally reunited with the family in America.
Stone brought with him his passport which carried the “J” symbol to identify his Jewish heritage, which he still has today.
